Professor Muthupandian Ashokkumar (Ashok), a senior academic staff member of the School of Chemistry, University of Melbourne, is a Physical Chemist and specializes in Sonochemistry. He is the Deputy Director of Melbourne India Postgraduate Program and Associate Dean (Engagement), Faculty of Science. He was the Director of First Year Studies in the School of Chemistry and has been involved in curriculum development for various subjects in Chemistry. Ashok has developed a number of novel techniques to characterize acoustic cavitation bubbles and has made major contributions of applied sonochemistry to the Food and Dairy industry. His research team has developed a novel ultrasonic processing technology for improving the functional properties of dairy ingredients.
Recent research also involves the ultrasonic synthesis of functional nano- and biomaterials including protein microspheres for diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. He has received over $ 10 million in research grants and supervised more than 20 PhD and 15 postdoctoral scholars. He has edited/co-edited several books and special issues for journals; published ~250 refereed papers in high impact international journals and books (H-Index 34). He has served on a number of University of Melbourne management committees and scientific advisory boards of external scientific organizations. He is an Editorial Board Member of Ultrasonics Sonochemistry.
